スタンフォード大学リーダーシップセミナーの様子を生徒の日記とともにお伝えします。

Today, I made a presentation about my study at Stanford University. I have been preparing this presentation for today since July. It was difficult for me to understand its details; however, I was able to explain about it. When I gave a presentation, I was nervous because there were two researchers. After that, I was asked some questions from them. Also, I asked them questions to utilize their idea for my research. This experience was very helpful. I fully felt my lack of knowledge through this opportunity. When I return, I want to examine about cancer and iPSC more. We had a dinner with Colin’s family. I enjoyed talking with Colin and his wife. After dinner, they gave us a life to the hotel. Finally, we listened to a lecture by Mr. Akama. I thought it’s important not to be afraid of making mistakes. (August 8 M.B)

Today, in Stanford University, I watched my members’ presentation about biology and mathematics. The content was very difficult. Then we visited the Stem Cell Center where they showed us around their laboratory. There were lots of very expensive machines and I thought it was very advanced. Unlike Japan, this place was suitable for people with kids. For lunch, we went to a Japanese restaurant called “Hokkaido”. I thought Japanese food would come out but most of the dishes were Chinese, so I was surprised. After that, we went to Intel. We were able to play with all the fun machines. There were many cute goods so I bought a sticker.
At night, we went to a restaurant for dinner. I thought it would be a BBQ but it was actually a BBQ restaurant. We went back to hotel by one of the mentors, Yuki’s car, and the roof was opened so I was surprised. We listened to a speech at night. Since it was in Japanese, I was able to understand it. In the last reflection time, Ms.Godwin cried. Because all teachers helped me, I was able to do my presentation well. When the reflection finished, I felt this studying program was finishing. Therefore, I felt sad and I wanted to stay here more. (August 8 S.H)

I made a presentation at Stanford University. Though two researchers came, I could not give my presentation properly and was ashamed of myself because I still didn’t understand one part of the paper. However, I gave my presentation. We were asked some questions by two researchers and I should have been able to answer although the answer wasn’t in the papers that we read. I had a valuable experience and making the presentation was very fun. We had dinner with Colin’s family and I enjoyed talking with his wife in the car on the way to the hotel. After having returned to the hotel, we enjoyed playing in the pool. After that, we listened to Mr. Akama’s lecture. It was in Japanese so I was able to understand deeply. I think that it was a good chance to reconsider my future. At last, we did the last reflection. I thought that I learned various things and my way of life has changed. (August 8 C.F)

Today, we went to the DVC. There are some Japanese people who had been studying there or went to DVC and they talked to about us their stories. I was surprised with their reasons for coming to America because some students’ reasons were just that they wanted to come. I thought that people who leave Japan to study must have some reason like; “I want to research about something, but I can’t do that in Japan, so I’m going to go overseas.” Today, we also went to UC Berkley. My teachers said that the area was a bit dangerous so I was a little careful. But the cityscape was really good. This school trip is going to finish soon, so I want to enjoy it until the end. (August 7 T.T)

Today, I played with the spaghetti and marshmallow tower, Lego prototyping, and water bottles. It was difficult, but really fun!! We had to create them as fast and as well as possible. First, I learned what it means to get the correct answer from repeated failure from spaghetti and marshmallow tower. Second, I discovered how difficult it is to express what you want to tell someone using pictures that I learnt from when we used the Lego prototyping.
Third, these activities required us to use creative thinking to try and include some of the best ways to achieve our goal and we were able to also use ideas from our experience. From these points, I thought that prototyping was important. (August 3 H.M)

Today was the third day to go to Stanford university. I think we could learn a lot.
We had a lecture from Mr. Murphy-Shigematsu about “Mindfulness”. I had done it when I took part in the brass band contest; however, everything he taught us was so new to me. After his lecture, we went to the Windhover. This building is so quiet and artistic.
We had lunch with the professors for the first time. I was so surprised that Mr. Murphy-Shigematsu knew a lot about Japan. I talked with him about railways. I think he knew a lot more about Japan than me…
After lunch, we went to the art museum. It looked like a castle and was so beautiful. There were so many pictures and there were so many famous pictures in this museum. I was surprised. I really enjoyed taking pictures with my friends.
The most impressive event today was to play in the fountain. We also played in another place, but today’s one was bigger than yesterday. It was so nice to play in it.
I hope to get a lot of experiences more on the rest of this trip. (August 4 M.A)

Today was the last day of the Stanford youth program.
We did a final presentation, and my group talked about “sharegg”.
“Sharegg” is the solution to improve the life of a cell phone battery.
We discussed about its features; what is important or not.
With the mentor’s help, we had a significant amount of time in-group discussion.
On the presentation, I performed a short skit. I thought that something inside me changed while I was performing it. I felt like I break out of my shell.
The most surprising thing today was to know that the mentor who supported our group could speak Japanese fluently. He was pretending like he couldn’t understand it, so when we were discussing things, we tried to translate what we were talking about in Japanese to English. Yet, he was able to understand all the things what we were saying, so he gave us some hints about exactly what we needed. It helped our creativity to grow.
Throughout this workshop, I learned the importance of positivity and creativity. I want my creativeness to grow more after I go back to Japan, too.
I want to the next three days of this trip. (August 6 A.S)
