Bentley University is known for being the number one college for great internship opportunities and for ranking 10th place for having the best business curriculum. This university has a “General Business Education” as their biggest core, which is a system where all students will be taking business classes regardless of their major. The second core is the “General Education Core” which is to take one of the Arts and Sciences classes. The third is the major, and the fourth is the liberal studies major.
Bentley has more than 4,000 undergraduate students, with a 12:1 student to faculty ratio and an average class size of 26 students. Bentley has 25 majors and 36 minors, which is a little less than other universities or colleges we have seen in this tour.
As the university has the number one internship opportunities, Bentley also offers programs to study abroad in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, China, and more countries. This program not only allows you to study abroad but also offers internships. Many major companies, for instance, Apple, Microsoft and Converse, provide opportunities to students to experience marketing for their enterprise. In addition, Bentley has a student-run investing group to actually experience investing in one of their great facilities; the Trading Room in the Hughey Center For Financial Services. These are just a small portion of why the school holds a 97% placement rate of graduates who are in full-time positions after 6 months.
Although I am still wondering what I want to be in the future or what I genuinely want to do in my university life, I am interested in business so I thought that Bentley could be in one of my considerations for universities I want to go. Also hands down my best impression out of the universities we have visited.

Bentley University was the best school to enter for me, because of the school’s system. I was most fascinated by this school out of all universities we’ve seen in Boston. Bentley University is a school that trained in business. It’s known for school which has No.1 internship opportunity. Also this school is 10th place of all the American business universities. I’d like to introduce this school’s system and other good points.
First, about the system. You have to take 4 things. First, all student must take general business class. Second thing you must take is the general education like math or philosophy. Third thing you have to take is your own major. There are several types of classes like financial, business, management and marketing. Last thing you will take is LSM which is stand for Liberal Studies Major like psychology. I have been interested in sports psychology so I’m so looking forward to it. Also, you can take double major with business course and LSM course. However you can’t take both business or both LSM.
Second thing I was interested in is the curriculum which companies come to the Bentley University campus and do some workshops. Some popular companies comes to the school and solve the real problem with the students.
The third thing I want to talk about is internships. As I mentioned, this school has No.1 opportunity to do internships. 92% of students have done an internship once and 72% of students have done an internship twice. They said that you had better do a lot of internships, and find out what is suitable for you.
Bentley University was a very nice university which has lot of opportunities for students to learn business. I am interested in sports psychology and business. So in my opinion, it is very nice university.

We went to the Boston University today. Unfortunately we weren’t able to go around the campus and see the buildings very much, but we listened to a presentation done by two people who work at Boston University. I will talk about two things that I thought were interesting about BU.
The first part is the study abroad programs. There are 100 study abroad programs, and once in a four year degree all of the students are required to go study abroad. I think this is a great program because even you weren’t expecting to study abroad, from this opportunity you may be able to find a new interest or a major witch you have never tried.
The second part is the class size. The average class size is 27 people per class and the range of the class size is 20 to 30. Witch is small compared from other universities. This makes the University very attractive because you are able to take and absorb high quality lectures easily and can make a good relationship with the professors.
Boston University was more interesting than I expected it to be. Through the talk, I was able to realize that you can’t know about universities by just looking it up. You can find the best information by listening to the actual experiences of the students.

In the afternoon, we visited Brandeis University. We saw a lot of university facilities, and we also had a time to have a conversation with someone who works at Brandeis University about the school after we finished the tour. I’d like to write about two things that I thought are the best features of this university.
First, students at this university can choose to take any classes, even if they are out of your major. For example, if your major is business and you already took business classes, you can also take art, political science, etc. I think this is very interesting because in Japan I don’t know any university that has this system. And I was very attracted to their way of thinking. The woman who gave us the presentation said that students don’t have to choose one favorite thing. Now, I have some interest in the science field and politics so that one really interests me.
Second, this university is an R1 school. R1 universities are research universities in the United States classified as Doctoral Universities in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Students at Brandeis University have a lot of opportunities to engage with researching. Professors in this university re very close to students. Some of the professors tell their phone numbers and e-mail addresses, and if their students have a problem or question for their classes they will answer it, even at 8pm.
I had never heard of Brandeis University before this tour. However, this university is really good and also very hard to enter. This time, I learned there are many things that I don’t know in the world. From this experience I would like to try a lot of new things and find what I want to do in the future.

The first University we visited on day 2 was Harvard University. Throughout the 1.5 hours at Harvard, I think we found out a lot of things. One new thing I realized is that Harvard University takes care of traditions and histories way more compared with other universities by the form of architectures.
Despite being one of the top universities in the world, Harvard University has an undergraduate population around the average with 6766 people and a quarter are international students. The gender ratio is also relatively balanced with male to women being 51.7 to 48.3. Student to faculty ratio is 6:1 and 72.5% of the classes have fewer than 20 students. Harvard University also has a restrictive early action program which does not allow applicants to apply to other universities early program.
There are 50 undergraduate majors in Harvard. The most popular majors are economics, political science and government, history and liberal arts and they take up one-third of the student’s majors. Compared to universities like Northeastern University which has more than 170 majors and allows double majors, Harvard only has 50 and does not accept double majors so this university probably fits people who have a clear decision of what they want to study.
We went around the John Harvard statue, Widener library, Anderson memorial bridge and the building with the oldest computer. Walking around these facilities and areas gave us an image of a school life of a Harvard university student.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT was one of my “Dream schools”, my ideal school to enter in the future. With their extremely high ranks as the one of the best computer science school in many rankings. Actually seeing their huge campus was something I was most looking forward to in this trip.
A fact that had the biggest impact on me, as an aspect of many colleges of universities we have toured, especially MIT, was their playful idea using high leveled education or ability that they have. A story about a college student turning the windows on a building into Tetris, which is a story that I happened to find during my research about my best interest; computer science, was actually done my MIT student in MIT campus. I knew the story as some kind of myth, not in the mystic way but because of my preoccupied way of thinking that colleges are strict since it's a place to study or research. This trip is actually my second trip to tour the universities, but unlike the last trip I was able to know the fun side of those school, not only about admission or requirements.
One more thing that made MIT special in my memory was that they have a number for all facilities or classroom there, reminded of a school that has only prime number as buildings’ room number. I was able to see how students in MIT get familiar with new knowledge they learn every day. This atmosphere in this school made me curious about everything as if the whole building is talking to me.
This experience motivated my school activity, knowing how happy learning
can be in the future was something that cleared my mind towards my future.

We went to Suffolk University today. Unfortunately, Suffolk is on spring break this week, so we couldn’t listen to any students speak, but a woman who works in admissions told us about the features of this university. I will write about two big points of these features.
First, there aren’t so many students, so the student to teacher ratio is very low. I thought this would be a very good environment to study in. Second, Suffolk University is famous for the liberal arts. There were many art works by students everywhere on the campus. They were very cool, and I enjoyed them a lot.
Suffolk University was very different from Japan. The campus buildings are very big, and I thought that I didn’t want to get lost. Through today’s experience, I found my choices.

Emerson College has two main types of majors categorized into two groups, which are the School of Communication, and the School of Arts. The School of Communication includes majors like the Business of Creative Enterprises, Communication Sciences & Disorders, or Journalism, whilst the School of Arts holds majors such as Performing Arts, Film & Video Production, or Comedic Arts.
Emerson College is not just in Boston but has campuses in other locations as well. One is in Los Angeles, where most programs require internships. People usually move there for a summer program.
For applications, they do not require TOEFL scores if we take regular English classes like we do at Hiroo. They look at our GPA grade from 9th?11th grade (M3?H2). They also require an essay that is titled after our own life story, so they can get to know what kind of person we are.
Majors like Film & Video production do not necessitate a prior skill level, but rather look at whether we have the strong intention to take the major or not. Therefore, for example, submitting a short film that is about 5 minutes as part of the application is only recommended but not required.
Although Emerson College require a lot of money to pay, all of the technological gear bought for the college is for all of the students and they have the permit to use it for their own projects without having to pay back for them. Emerson also updates their technology every 2?3 years so that the students can learn how to use them, as technology will improve in companies as well.
Emerson College was the college I had the most interest in, and after listening to the lecture and tour, I gained even more interest and I was also able to gain more knowledge about this college. The people were all very kind and welcoming, the security at this college is very safe, and their majors are what I’m most interested in taking, so going to this college was a great experience for me.

In the afternoon, we went to Northeastern University. Northeastern University has an undergraduate enrollment of 18,463, which is very large. 20% of the undergraduate population are international students. The student to faculty ratio is 14:1. There are many early admission options, including early decision and early action, as well as the regular decision. 92% of undergraduate students are employed in a full-time job or enrolled in graduate school within nine months of graduation. All students are equally considered for a merit-based scholarship. There is no separate application process.
Popular majors include business, management, engineering, etc. Other than these, there are more than 175 majors in this university. The interesting aspects of this university are the combined majors, which allow two majors to be combined into one. For example, I am interested in Computer Science and I have options to take Computer Science and Design, Computer Science and Economics, Computer Science and Information Science, Computer Science and Journalism, Computer Science and Philosophy, and so on.
Unfortunately, the university tour guide was full, so we ask several questions to the admission officers and we went through the campus by ourselves. We visited the library, research center, and one of the on-campus residence buildings. The research center we visited was for graduate students, but undergraduate students also can visit there to study. The residence building we visited was named the “International Village” where lots of international students live. I personally liked the mood of the university, as well as the rich major options including combined majors.
