DAY 6
Today was the last day of the SFU’s program, which was the most enjoyable part of this training. There were three good things for me in my training today. First, I made a presentation which was a summary of this training. When this project began, I was not good at English and I was very worried. In the beginning, I could not speak English well enough to communicate, which caused some trouble for my teammates. However, the situation got better as I got along with my teammates and a mentor, Nate day by day. During the presentation, I made a few mistakes but I thought that I was able to do it with confidence. Second, Mr. Glenn listened to my research when I was having lunch and I was very happy. I could not speak English very well, but Mr. Glenn understood me with a gentle smile. Mr. Glenn suggested a solution to my research. I was a little happy with my poor English. So, it was a very nice day today. I wanted to make use of what I learned from this study for my future. (J.Y H1)

DAY 5
Today was cooler than the last few days in Sunnyvale, California. We started off with some creative play, where we came up with a game using ping pong rackets and balls. We had to use the frame of the racket to hit the ball. First, only one person created a new game with a racket and a ball, then Dr. Ong made more people join, making 10 people or so in the end. Next, Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu gave a presentation about mindfulness and loving kindness meditation. In the afternoon, we did an egg parachute game. We came up with the idea of covering the egg with two plastic containers and a parachute made out of a plastic bag, but it didn’t work and the egg cracked when we threw it from the second floor. It was a pity we couldn’t go to the 2nd floor so next time I’ll do this game, I would like to have more time and creativity along with sustainability. I have a group project presentation and the gratefulness photo essay, so I will do my best to make it something I’m proud of. (R. T M3)

Today was the fourth day of our trip at Stanford University. We were quite used to the teacher and the mentors and we had an almost regular day.
At first, we played a ping pong ball game where we had to create our own game using our imagination. It was quite difficult to create a new game, and I understood how long it takes people to create games, such as applications or board games. After that, we listened to Dr. Shigematsu’s lecture. We learned about mindfulness and the importance of relaxing in the nature to think about our past and our present future.
After that, we had played an egg parachute game, and I was disappointed that my partner and I couldn’t save our egg from breaking. We had confidence in our egg equipment but, it did not work. I think we only protected our egg from the bottom, but we had to protect all around the egg with air bags. We learned quite a lot of techniques from other groups.
We had some free time to do some shopping and to eat dinner, after which we came back to the hotel. Everyone had a lot of homework to do tonight and I thought we would stay up late to finish our projects. It has been a fulfilling few days and I hope we can spend the rest of the days very lively. DAY 4
I really enjoyed today. First, we listened to the lecture by Shivani Govil, who is the Vice President of AI / Cognitive Products for SAP Ariba. The topic was ‘How Ideas Hatch in the Enterprise.’ I learned many things. We had the time to ask her questions. At that time, everyone asked good questions. Then, we made a ‘Water bottle feature’ list. We designed new bottles with friends and made a presentation about it. It was very difficult, but there were many interesting ideas. For example, my friends designed a solar bottle. I thought it was very convenient if we had it. At noon, we ate pizza and it was very delicious. In the afternoon, we did an ‘Elevator pitch.’ We worked very hard to learn how to make persuasive advertising. Mr. Ong gave us some advice to improve the quality of our pitch. Today, many students were able to talk with mentors or teachers in English and actively joined in. And I was glad to buy many goods at the bookstore. I had lots of fun! I gradually become used to SFU so I want to do my best tomorrow. (Y.M H1)

Today, we had many programs. First, we did a buzzer game. I liked playing the game, because it was lots of fun to play and it eased our tension. So I joined in the program more than before. Then we had a special presentation by one of the mentor’s mother. She made a presentation about the device like google glasses. I understood the lecture more than yesterday’s which was about the process of creating new products. We ate pizza at the terrace for lunch. At that time, I talked with Thomas who is the son of Dr.Ong. It was fun to talk with him, and I talked with other mentors with whom I haven’t talked a lot. Then we designed an innovative water bottle. We made a feature list about the water bottle that Dr. Ong brought. It was fun to describe the features of each bottle because they had a lot of similar and different features, so it was fun to talk about new features. Finally, we did an elevator pitch. We did eye-contact training with other people. I felt I didn’t make enough eye contact before, so I will continue to make eye contact even after I go back to Japan. I thought I could do more in the class, so I will try more from tomorrow. (H. I H1)

DAY 3
Today was the second day to go to Stanford University. First, we wrote a message to our past ourselves. It reminded me that I was supported by a lot of people or things so far. Next, we had a presentation from Mr. Glenn Katz, a professor at Stanford. He talked about sustainability and about the system of buildings in Stanford campus. The efficient structure that considered the sustainability of buildings in Stanford University was really impressive. After lunch, we did a “spaghetti and marshmallows tower” activity. In the first round, my team couldn’t make the tower stand. In the second round, we thought about what was wrong and we were able to reach a record of 25 inches (50cms). In this exercise, Dr. Colin repeatedly said, “Fail early, fail fast.” I thought we don’t have to have a fear of failure. We also played a Lego exercise (a lesson in design-build). It required a good imagination and spatial ability, so this game was very difficult for me. However, those games were so interesting, so I want to do them again. After those games, we discussed “designing problems” in groups. In our team, the members couldn’t talk in English yesterday, however, we had a good discussion in English today. This gave us confidence and I was very happy. In the end, we had a presentation about Dr. Gardner’s research. I was surprised to hear about the relationship between the brain and visual information. His presentation taught me a lot. We learned a lot in today’s program. I gradually became accustomed to communicating in English, so I would like to make the rest of the program fulfilling. (N.K H2)

Today is the second day at Stanford University. I did a lot of fun activities. For example, an exercise using LEGO and building a tower from spaghetti and marshmallows. In the LEGO exercise, it was difficult to build the exact model that I wanted to build according to the picture my friend drew. On the other hand, it was a lot of fun to see my friends’ pictures and understand their ideas. In the “spaghetti and marshmallows” tower activity, we had two rounds. In the first round, most of the teams couldn’t build a tower that stood up long enough. But my team built a tower that was 23 inches (58cms). I was glad because we came in first. In the second round, most teams broke the record. However, we tried other methods and it did not work. Therefore, our tower fell down. Dr. Colin said to us “fail early, fail fast”. It is a good to plan firmly logically, but I learned that there must also be other good ways to try and improve a lot. Besides these activities, Glenn Katz gave us a lecture about sustainable urban systems and I also visited Dr. Gardner’s lab and asked about his research. Both experiences were very interesting and valuable. I have been able to speak more English since yesterday. I will try to speak positively to enjoy conversations in English tomorrow. (M.H H1)

Today is the second day of the Stanford program. We listened to the guest speaker, Glenn Katz who is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He talked about building and product design. For example, the building that we use in this program allows natural light in so we can study without using fluorescent light. This is very good for the environment. In the afternoon, we did a Lego exercise. This was a lesson in designing and building. First, we took ten random Lego blocks. Next, I imagined and drew what I could build with these blocks. Finally, my partner and I changed the design and built it according to my partner’s design. It looked very easy, but it was very difficult to build. I learned it was difficult to communicate with people what I want do. After the lecture, we visited one of the labs at Stanford. We listened to the presentation by Dr. Gardner. He was very good at Japanese. He talked about the relationship between the eyes and the brain. I was very excited in this lecture. I couldn’t understand Colin’s presentation well yesterday, but today I understood his presentation more than yesterday, and I was also able to speak English more. I’m glad my attitude has changed. I want to enjoy tomorrow’s program. (C. I H1)
