Monday August 1
Today was the very big day. First, I made a presentation on scientists’ research at Stanford University. I made it in front of the researchers from Stanford. It was the first time for me to make a presentation in a foreign country, so I felt very nervous. The day before, I practiced my presentation until very late at night to succeed in my presentation. I thought I did my best but after my presentation, the researchers asked me many questions that I couldn’t answer, I got scared and I was quite frustrated. I think this made me strong and motivated in a positive way. I was very happy to make a presentation in front of those researchers, for I think this was a very precious chance that not everyone can experience. Second, I went to Google. The campus was very big and it was very fun to visit. I walked around the Google campus and played in a pool filled with soft balls. After that, I went to ‘’Armadillo Willy’s BBQ’’ to eat dinner. We ate ribs with Dr.Colin and I could talk with him a lot. I ate about 3 times as much as my friends. I had a very good time. At night, I made the presentation in front of other professors from Stanford at the hotel. But I wasn’t nervous and I enjoyed it. After that, we had Mr.Kimura and Hitomi’s birthday party. We ate cakes and they were delicious. I want to enjoy the last two days. (H1-7 A.G)

Monday, August 1
In the morning, I had a presentation about iPS cell at Stanford University. I was very nervous because it was the first time to give a presentation to expert researchers. At first, I thought I should have given up making the presentation today, but at the same time, when I began to make the presentation, I started to think, “if I do it at all, I’ll enjoy it as much as I can”. After that, I was absorbed in my presentation. Of course, one of the reasons why I could enjoy it more was my friend who gave the presentation with me. The experts gave us a lot of advice. I’ll make use of that from now on. Furthermore, I enjoyed the Google campus tour. The people working there were buzzing with their work, and I was fascinated with the atmosphere. There were many kinds of “Bugdroids” in the campus. For example, one was wearing colorful clothes and sweets. I took a lot of pictures there; moreover, I bought some stickers at the Google shop. I listened to some of the junior high students’ presentations in the evening. The quality of them was as great as the high school students’. After that, we celebrated my friend and teacher’s birthday. They looked very satisfied so I was really happy. It was the best day so I felt happy. (H1-7 H.J)

Monday, August 1
I had a very satisfying day today. I made a presentation about the paper I had read in front of researchers at Stanford University. I thought that I was getting used to presenting in public through this seminar, but, actually, I was very nervous. I couldn’t talk well and answer all of the questions from the researchers. I got quite frustrated then. However, this experience was very valuable and it helped me grow as a person. I thought that I should study more and the course gave me further interest about botany. I’m going to study more about botany from now on. After that, we visited Google. I thought that the “G Bike” was a very good idea. “G Bike” is a bicycle which the staff of the Google office can ride freely. I think Japanese companies and universities should adopt this idea. That night, we held a birthday party for Hitomi and Mr.Kimura. We had a very enjoyable time! (H1-7 A.F)

Monday, August 1
Today was an incentive day for me. In the morning, I did a presentation about a science article which was about iPS cells in front of some specialists on researching. In the moment that I did presentation, I felt nervous but excited at the same time. I was scared of giving a presentation in front of the professionals, but I was lucky to get a chance to do presentation in front of them. I could get some advice and learned a lot of things from this event. I will make use of this precious experience in my later life. In the evening, we went to the Google campus. We were surprised at how big the campus was. We also saw how ideas are contrived, such as memos on the glass wall and using relaxing chairs. That night, we had some guests and we did some presentations for the next day. There were a lot of interesting topics in the junior high school students’ presentations. After the presentation, there was a surprise for me and Mr. Kimura. It was a birthday party. Thank you for celebrating with me! (H1-7 H.T)

Sunday, July 31
Today was our last day at the workshop. The five days here in Stanford passed quickly. We couldn’t believe it was the last day we were coming to the classroom, we spend with Dr. Colin and all the other mentors. Everyone managed to present with their best effort. We used all the skills we learned, not only from the workshop here in Stanford, but from the ones we learned from Mr. Nishida in Japan. Some people reflected that they could have done better, but I think all the presentations were splendid. Dr. Colin watched our presentations with a smile, which made us realize our growth through this workshop. After the presentations, we wrote a letter to ourselves in the future, five years from now. Each of us made a video asking how were the five years. It was a bit hard to imagine what everyone would be like in five years. Everyone received a completion certificate, which reminded us that it was the end. All of us held each other’s hand and jumped together for the last photo during the workshop.
Our late lunch was at the “American-Chinese Restaurant” with Dr. Colin and the mentors. It was the best lunch in the five days!!
These five days will be our treasure and we’ll never forget it. Thank you Dr. Colin and the mentors!! (H1-7 A.T)

Friday, July 29
Today, I have done many things and I really enjoyed them. The “Campus Walkabout” was very exciting! We went to Cantor Art Museum. There were many kinds of art such as paintings, statues and so on. The paintings about nature were very beautiful. The art that expresses Yosemite National Park was my most favourite. It was very mysterious. And I learned a lot of things from the various activities. The most interesting and useful thing was “Fail early and Fail fast”. This sentence says that if we fail early, we can find a better way earlier than if we don’t, and if we fail early, we can change the way we do something. This thinking was very powerful when I joined the group work. When we were stuck, I remembered this phrase. Then, we could go forward. I think this idea is useful at school, as well. So, I will use it many times after this trip. (H1-7 A.M)

Saturday, July 30
During our fifth day, we were able to do exercises that were a little bit different today. Though this program is about leadership skills, we had some time to look towards our inner selves, to know who we are. We were able to listen to Mr. Murphy Shigematsu’s mindfulness classroom. Personally, I learned that accepting oneself is good enough, and that we are helping to accept others as well. At the contemplation center, we also learned about ourselves more deeply with the sound of a small river flowing. Being the second half of this program, I could see the bond between everybody in this program and with the mentors as well. In addition, we did some activities such as the human knot game, which let people solve problems with others. People should not hesitate to give any ideas that they have. Secondly, we did a hand squeeze game to improve the skills of understanding and telling others what you want to say. Moreover, the elevator pitch was to capture the listener’s hearts in order to convince them of something, which I thought was the hardest at first sight. The common thing between us is that we should continue to keep the posture and attitude to give for the team, and accept all members. (M3-7 J.K)

Saturday, July 30
Today, we learned many things. Firstly, we played “human knot game”. The game needed teamwork and communication skills. Our team beat the game very fast. So I think we communicated well. Dr.Colin said that there are some questions which have no answer, and we can give up solving with that way and start to solve again. Secondly, we played BEZZER game in which we held our hands and lined up, and then we shuck hands to pass the number of times that we felt shaking from the next person. Thirdly, we thought “who am I ?” Then, we listened to the story of “Mindfulness” spoken by Dr. Murphy Shigematu. We know a lot of things about mindfulness. For example, “we cannot to change consciously. So we should accept as it is and do something that you can now, then we will change.” After hearing the story, I realized how to live from now on. Finally, we practiced “elevator pitch”. It is a very important skill to negotiate. I want to make this project meaningful by thinking a great deal day to day.
(H1-7 K. W.)

Saturday, July 30
Today, we learned very important things to grow as a person. We talked positively to Dr Colin, Dr Murphy and mentors. Firstly, we played “human knot game”. The game needed not only ability of think but also teamwork. Then, we listened to the lecture from Dr Murphy. The lecture was beyond my wildest imaginings. Mindfulness has been applied into education and health care, as well as business. Doing mindfulness, we can realize the real me. When we did meditation, we asked us “Who am I ?” I want to read the book written by Dr Murphy. Finally, we were taught about Elevator Pitch. Acquiring this skill, it will be useful in the future. he skill needs imagination, creativity, motivation, active listening, fast thinking, purpose, passion and EI. I thought it was very difficult for me to acquire this skill, however, I want to acquire this skill to be a good person. In this program, we have to learn many things .So I want to think a great deal of every lecture. (H1-7 Y. I)

Friday, July 29
It was a day that I began after rising late today. First, in the morning class of Dr.Colin, I learned about eye contact. I learned the importance of expressing body languages to assist our communication. I think listening to my partner’s story is a part of leadership skills and it deepens understanding about other people’s intentions. I was able to make use of the reflection time last night during the team working activities in the afternoon. Talking about the product which we are developing with mentors was really fun, which was fresh to me. We talked about the drawing and building Lego. It was also fresh to me. After the lunch break, we took photos during the campus tour of Stanford UC. I like bicycles, and looking at them around the campus and taking photos around the bicycle parking was lots of fun. I’m going to use a photograph of the road racer for my photo essay. In the Stanford Art Museum, I was able to see some African folk handicraft works, which were my favorite. I learned that Stanford University developed not only scientific study but also the field of the art, which was really great. I’ll get up early and will do my best tomorrow. (M3-7 M.K)
