【Friday August 12th, 2011】
Today with the sun shining and a beautiful clear sky, we returned to school for a regular day of classes. The day started off with students being picked up by their buddies and taken to regular classes for the morning portion of the day. Again, the experiences had by students were very varied but I think as time passes and the students gain experience in these classes, so to will their confidence grow as to will their ability to cope with all the challenges that arise while here in Australia.

今日、天気は晴れ。今日は授業でした。午前はパートナーと一緒に一般授業、午後はESL授業です。このあいだと同じように、一般授業で、色々な経験が出来ました。皆、徐々に慣れるとともに自信がついていくと思います。

In the afternoon, the two classes joined together and headed to the library for a research task. The students were arranged into pairs and each were given an Australian animal to research for 45 minutes. At the end of the 45 minutes, the pairs were required to present their findings to the group (of course this was to be done in English!). At first, I was a little concerned about whether or not the students would be able to complete this task but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by everyone’s performance. Each group did a great job of researching their animals and were able to present this information to their groups in English- quite an achievement!

昼間は皆が現地校の図書館に集まり、特別な研究活動をやりました。ペアに分かれ、各ペアでオーストラリアの動物を研究し、最後にグループの前でプレゼンすることになりました。正直言って、英語のプレゼンが出来るのか心配がありました。しかし、皆協力してしっかり自分の動物を研究して素敵なプレゼンが出来ました！

This was a great way to finish off the week and as I bid the students farewell as they left that day with their host families, I wondered what kind of things would they see and do this weekend. I look forward to hearing about it all on Monday morning!

良い１週間を過ごしたと思います。今週末、ホストファミリーと何をするのでしょう。月曜日にその事を聞くのが楽しみです。

【Monday August 13th, 2011】

Again we were greeted with the sun shining and what looked like to be a beautiful day. Arriving at school, I was greeted by the students who were already relaying to their friends what they had done, seen and eaten over the previous weekend. This time I heard such things as “we went to the museum”, “we had a barbecue on the beach” and even “we spent the weekend on a boat!”. From most accounts it sounds like a wonderful time is being had.

今日も天気は晴れ。私が学校に着いたときに、もう学校に着いていた生徒達はどんな週末を過ごしたかについて話していました。「博物館へ行った」、「ビーチでバーベキューをやった！」、「船で週末を過ごしました！」等の声が聞こえました。色々な素晴らしい体験が出来たようです。

Starting off the day, we went to the fortnightly held school assembly. It started off with the students singing the national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair” and then the school song. Following that, many awards were given out for the many different sports played here at St. Pauls.

一日の始まりに学校の二週間会に参加しました。国歌「Advance Australia Fair」と校歌を歌い、スポーツ活動に対してたくさんの賞が贈られました。

Following the assembly, the students went to the ESL lesson which focused on describing what they had done over the weekend. Specific focus was placed on using the past tense forms for different verbs. To warm up, the students discusses what they each did on their weekends and then they reviewed some grammar and vocabulary related to this. After that students then wrote a diary entry describing what they did over the weekend. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the accuracy and amount of writing that the students did.

集会終了後、ESL授業を受けました。最初、皆が 「open talk」 でどんな週末を過ごしたかについて話しました。最後に皆が先週末について日記を書きました。皆、一生懸命、日記を書き、素敵で長い日記を書く事が出来たことに感動していました。

After lunch, students were again paired up with their buddies for an afternoon of regular classes.

昼食後、生徒達はパートナーと一緒に一般授業を受けました。

【８月１０日】
オーストラリアの一日の時間割は、広尾学園と大分異なります。
１時間めが９：２０頃から始まり、１１：００頃に終わります。その後１１：２５までモーニングティーという時間があり、ホストファミリーが用意してくれたモーニングティーを食べます。
モーニングティーは、フルーツであったり、軽いスナック菓子であったり、ヨーグルトであったりいろいろです。
その後１２：５０まで授業をし、１：４０までランチタイムです。
１：４０?１５：００頃まで授業をし、一日の授業が終わります。
「１コマ」が長いので英語を集中して聞いているととても疲れるようですが、一日が終わった後は達成感があるようです。

今日は、１時間めにEFLの授業を受け、オーストラリアの地理について学びました。現地の生徒が使用する地理の教科書を参考書代わりにしながら、ワークシートを埋めていました。
モーニングティーの後は、こちらに来て初めての体育の授業がありソフトボールをしました。４チームに分かれて競いましたが、久々に身体を動かした生徒が多かったようで、思い切り走り、応援し、とても楽しそうに９０分間を過ごしました。
明日は、幼稚園を訪問します。出発前から準備してきた歌を披露する予定です。

【8月１１日】
今朝は少々曇っていたため、朝はいつもより肌寒く感じました。生徒達は持って来たセーターやウインドブレーカーを来て登校しました。朝夜は冷えますが、体調を崩す生徒もいず、皆元気に過ごしています。

本日は、幼稚園を訪問しました。３?４歳の生徒との交流を楽しみ、練習してきた校歌と平和をテーマにした曲を披露しました。生徒達は、出発前から練習をしてきましたが、限られた時間の中で効率よく準備をし、いい発表ができたと思います。

また、本日は日本語の授業にも参加してきました。７月から日本語を習い始めた７年生と会話を楽しみました。「日本語」の授業ではありましたが、まだ習い始めて間もないので、広尾学園の生徒が学校や日本について英語で伝えていました。

こちらの生徒がGoogle mapで広尾学園を調べ、学校について、東京について、日本の家族について等々の質問をし、広尾学園の生徒がその質問にひとつずつ答えていました。日本から自分の身の回りの写真を撮って来ていた生徒達は、それを見せながら説明を加えていました。

生徒達は、英語で質問されていることはほぼわかり、これまでに習ってきた文法を駆使して英語で伝えていました。

日本の文化を伝えている中、ある一角からは「せっせっせーのよいよいよい」と歌と笑い声が聞こえ、とても楽しそうないい雰囲気でした。

午後のEFLの授業では、オーストラリアについて自分たちでパンフレットを作るというアクティビティをしました。

雑誌から切り取った写真を貼付け、英語でその説明を簡潔にしてあるパンフレット等、短い時間でなかなかクオリティーの高いパンフレットが出来上がっていました。

明日は、EFLの授業とスポーツアクティビティがあります。

【Wednesday August 10th, 2011】
This morning, the students were introduced to their St. Paul’s buddies at a barbeque that they put on for us. To start things off, they went to the school gym and played some fun group games together. After this, the students went with their new buddies to regular classes (such as Math, science, English, Technology and PE) for the first two periods before lunch. I think this was a good opportunity for students to get to know their buddies and to experience actual Australian classes. It was interesting to hear what kind of experiences that were had by students; they ranged from “It was interesting”, to “Oh, it looked easy!”, to “I didn’t understand a thing!”. No doubt these classes will be a challenge for many of them but hopefully each and every student are able to gain something positive out of these experiences.

In the afternoon, the students returned to their English classes and learned about some native Australian animals.

Tomorrow, we are scheduled to go to Australia Zoo and I think this will be a most exciting and educational day.

今朝、BBQで現地校のパートナー（buddy）をそれぞれ紹介されました。初めに、皆と一緒に体育館で楽しいゲームをしました。そして、パートナーと一緒に一般の授業を受けに行きました。皆、色々な教科、英語、数学、理科、社会などの授業を体験しました。皆戻ってきた時に、自分たちが受けた授業について話しをしました。色々な印象がありそうでした。「面白かった！」、「簡単でした」、そして「分からなかったのよ！」という表現も聞こえました。もちろん、一般のクラスに参加するのは大変難しいですが、皆一生懸命頑張れば、良い体験になると思います。

明日オーストラリア動物園に行く予定ですので、今日の午後は、ESLの授業でオーストラリアの動物誌について学びました。また明日、良い１日になりますように！

【Thursday August 11th, 2011】
Today was the first of the full-day outings for the group. Our schedule was to spend the day at the famous Australian Zoo (http://www.australiazoo.com.au/). At Australia Zoo, visitors can see a wide variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles, and can view crocodile feedings, hand-feed elephants, and have hands-on animal encounters. Needless to say, it has a lot to offer and all of the students and myself were looking forward to the day.

今日はこの留学初の遠足でした。行先はオーストラリア動物園です。オーストラリア動物園では様々な鳥や、哺乳類動物、爬虫類などが見られ、ワニのエサやりを見たり、色々な動物と触れ合ったりする事が出来ます。皆今日の遠足楽しみにしていました。

Arriving at school, it was noticeably brisker than it had been on the days up until now. Previously, we had been blessed by relatively warm days and clear blue skies. Today however, there were a few clouds in the sky with a hint of rain. Despite this fact, everyone arrived at school with big smiles and great enthusiasm looking forward to what the day had in store.

今日まで比較的暖かく、澄んだ青空に恵まれていましたが、今日は少し雨が降り、涼しかったです。それでも、皆のテンションは高く、笑顔にあふれていました。

We spent the first half of the day as a group and we saw a range of crocodiles and alligators before lining up to hand-feed the elephants. It was great to watch the students approach the elephants with both awe and apprehension and then as the elephants gleefully took the fruit from their hands, to see the students’ faces light up into big smiles. It was a great moment indeed.

午前は、皆で一緒に動物園を回りました。まずワニを見て、象の所へ行きました。象には自分の手から餌をあげることができ、皆ほんとうに楽しそうに果物をあげていました。

After that, we headed to the crocoseum for a live show which featured a range of exotic birds, audience interaction and lastly some big crocodiles. It was a most entertaining and educational show for all.

その後、動物のショーを見ました。そこでは実際の鳥や蛇、おおきなワニ等を見て、彼らについて学びました。すごく楽しい勉強になりました。

The last portion of the day we spent together as a group was at the kangaroo sanctuary where one can get up close and personal with kangaroos. Despite being my third time here, this is something that I am yet to tire of and watching the students respond to these wonderful animals is always a treat. Particularly enjoyable was the fact that we are able to see a kangaroo whose mother was still carrying a joey in her pouch. So cute!

ショー終了後、沢山のカンガルーに触れるくらいまで近づける、カンガルー天国と言う所に移動しました。私が訪れるのは三回目ですが、ここは飽きません。特に初めて来た生徒達の反応を見るのは嬉しいものです。母親カンガルーのお腹の袋に入った赤ちゃんも見ることができ、とても楽しかったです。

The rest of the day was handed over to the students for free time. As I wandered around by myself, I came across many a group of smiling students relaying the different animals that they had seen thus far. It seems a big favorite for a number of them were unsurprisingly the cute koalas and I must say, I can see why.

残りの時間は自由時間です。皆色々な動物を見て回っていましたが、１番人気は勿論、可愛いコアラのようです。

Despite the coldness and a few intermittent showers, it was another great day here in Brisbane. Tomorrow we are back at school for classes. Here’s looking forward to a great Friday and a great end to the week!

にわか雨も降りましたが、今日もとてもよい１日でした。

St.Paul’s Home Stay Report

Monday August 8th, 2011

I was most anxious to meet our students this morning to see and hear how they fared over the first weekend with their host families. Meeting them this morning, I was glad to be greeted with smiling faces and a variety of tales and comments: “we went to the beach”, “we had a barbeque”, “we saw kangaroos” and even “we ate kangaroo!” were but some of the things that I heard. From all accounts, the weekends spent were varied and no doubt different from anything the students had ever experienced.

今朝は、生徒達が現地で初めての週末をホストファミリーとどう過ごしたのかとても気がかりでした。今朝彼らに会った時、笑顔と色々な話を受け、嬉しく思いました。「ビーチへ行った」「BBQをした」「カンガルーを見た」更には「カンガルーを食べた!」などなど言っていました。生徒達はこの週末今までにはない経験ができたようです。

Today involved a lot of introductory activities: meeting teachers, receiving materials and school tours. The students were also given special study tour shirts (red polo shirts) that they are to wear for the course of the stay and they looked great. By the time lunchtime came around, the students were very hungry and sat on the grass to eat the lunches prepared by their host mothers- sandwiches and fruit for the most part- quite different from the bento lunches that students are used to.

今日は導入活動：教師との教師、資料の受け取り、学校の見学　などをしました。そして生徒達は、現地校で着る特別なシャツ（赤いポロシャツ）もいただきました。皆似合っていました。お昼時間には腹ぺこで、ホストマザーが作ってくれたランチ-大抵はサンドイッチやフルーツなど、いつものお弁当とはちがうランチを芝生に座って食べていました。

The highlight of the day was the afternoon aboriginal culture workshop by Lucas Proudfoot (http://www.circularhythm.com/). Lucas is a talented and dynamic entertainer who plays the didgeridoo and a number of other instruments and captured the attention of all the students teaching them about aboriginal history and culture all the while playing a variety of songs. Students were invited to the stage were able to experience playing the didgeridoo and a variety of percussion instruments.

今日のハイライトは、 Lucas Proudfootによるアボリジニの文化ワークショップでした。Lucasは、didgeridoo ディジェリドゥー(オーストラリア先住民の木管楽器)や、その他複数の道具を演奏する、才能がありダイナミックで人を引きつけるエンターテイナーです。彼はアボリジニの歴史や文化を教え、様々な曲を演奏をして、生徒達の心をしっかりつかまえました。生徒達は、ディジュリドゥや打楽器など様々な楽器に触れ、体験もさせてもらいました。

All in all, day one was enjoyable and successful and I look forward to what day two has in store.

楽しく上出来な初日だったと思います。２日目も楽しみです。

Tuesday August 9th, 2011

Today was the first full day of ESL classes and the students were stating to get used to their surroundings and teachers. Little by little, the students are showing more confidence in speaking English which is great to see. Tomorrow, the students are scheduled to be meeting and having a barebeque with some of the students from St.Paul’s and they are looking forward to this. Each Hiroo student will be introduced to a buddy who will look after them and with whom they will attend some regular classes later in the trip. Hopefully it should be a great day!

今日は初めて午前、午後ともESL授業でした。生徒達は環境と先生達に慣れてきたようです。少しずつ英語を話すのに自信を持ち始めたようで嬉しく思います。
明日はSt.Paul’s の生徒達とBBQをする予定で、みんな楽しみにしています。生徒達は、そこで今後の授業などを一緒に受ける現地校のパートナー（buddy）をそれぞれ紹介されます
良い１日になりますように！

本日（８月８日）のMatthew Flinders校の様子をご報告いたします。

本日から本格的に授業が始まりました。
朝は、７時半過ぎから徐々に集まり始め、８時半には全員が集合場所に到着しました。
友人が到着するとそこに輪ができ、週末ホストファミリーと何をしたか、どういう会話をしたかを報告し合っていました。
その表情はとても楽しそうで、緊張しながらもいい時間を過ごしたことがわかりました。

午前中の授業では、この３週間で使用する教科書が配布されました。７２ページもあり、もちろんすべて英語で書かれてあり、それだけで「英語しか使用しない」ことを改めて確認し、引き締まった空気になりました。そして、本日だけで早速８ページ進み、宿題も課されました。

１４人ずつ２クラスに分かれて授業を受けていますが、先生が教室を歩きながら質問をし、挙手して答えたり、当てられたりと、双方向の授業展開でした。

生徒達は、電子辞書を開いて調べながらも先生の言っていることを聞き取り、答えを言ったり書いたりと忙しそうに、真剣に授業を受けていました。

ランチタイムは、外のベンチや芝生の上でホストファミリーが作ってくれたランチボックスを開けて食べていました。

どの生徒も、豪華なランチボックスで、「先生、食べきれません。」と嬉しそうに見せてくれていました。

午後は、日本語の授業に参加しました。

日本語のクラスでは「家族について紹介する」をテーマに来週発表するプレゼンテーションの準備をしていました。

生徒達は、グループに分かれ、各グループメンバーのプレゼンテーション内容をチェックしてあげていました。

オーストラリアの生徒が日本語で話し、広尾学園の生徒が英語で教えていたり、日本語の発音を直してあげていたりと、楽しい光景でした。

３時過ぎに授業が終わり、４時頃までには全員ホストファミリーのお迎えがあって帰宅していきました。

大きく体調を崩している生徒もいなく、無事本日を終えました。明日もまた授業を受けます。

8月9日　オーストラリアに到着してから本日で４日めになりますが、こちらはずっと晴れています。
朝は少々肌寒いですが、日中は日差しが強く暖かく感じます。

今日は、宿題であったダイアリーのチェックから授業が始まりました。

昨日あった出来事をノート１ページにきっちり書いて来た生徒が何人もいて、こちらの先生も驚かれていました。

午前中は、EFLの授業で昨日に引き続き教科書を使った授業を受けました。

今日のトピックは、オーストラリアのお金についてでした。
買い物に行って、コインで買い物ができるようコインの計算の仕方を学びました。
明日はこのトピックに関連して、実際に買い物に行ったときの会話を学ぶようです。

ちょうど明日は１０年生のビジネスクラスの生徒が学内にショップを出すとのことで実践練習ができそうです。
午後は、こちらの生徒の授業に参加し、パン作りを一緒に行いました。
実際に小麦粉からパンを作り、屋外で火にあぶりながらパン生地を焼き、学内の農場で採れる蜂蜜をつけて食べました。

こちらの生徒達との交流もあり、学内の施設を利用しながらの授業に生徒達はとても楽しんでいるようでした。
生徒達は、日頃の英会話の効果もあってか、物怖じせずに話しかけている姿を見かけます。
そして、授業が始まってまだ２日しか経っていませんが、授業内の会話がほとんど英語になってきました。

１週間後には、生徒達自身が自分達の変化に気付くことを期待しつつ見守っています。
