Today was the second day of the YCISL. We did activities that were related to prototyping. For example, spaghetti and marshmallow tower, Lego prototyping, and water bottle feature exercise. In addition, we had a presentation from Mr. Glenn Katz about sustainability and went to Hover Tower.
All of the prototyping exercises were very enjoyable and fun to do. In spaghetti and marshmallow tower, we had two rounds. For the first round, most people couldn’t get even an inch. However, most people broke their records on the second round. From this result, Dr.Colin said to us “fail early, fail fast”. Since it made me feel like as if I’m a scientist, it felt good. For the Lego prototyping, I was amazed at how we can tell what people are thinking just by drawing a picture. In addition I was surprised not only where you can tell what you are thinking about but also tell really precisely. Finally, I learned a new way to come up with ideas throughout the water bottle feature exercise. The new way is to gather things that are good and use those things to create new stuff. Although this sounds pretty simple, every time I try to come up with a new idea, I just try to come up with a completely new idea.
In conclusion, with all of the lessons I learned, I think these things can be taken back to Japan. Not only to gain information, but if there’s any chance I want to give something to someone that they don’t have. (August 3 T.R)
Today, we met Mr. Murphy and learnt about mindfulness. We settled in quietly at windhover, closed our eyes, cleared our minds, and though of our favorite things and places. In the mindfulness, I was able to think about myself deeply. I’ve never thought of such things in my usual life, so it was very fresh for me. Although it seemed easy to sit still with my eyes closed, it was a bit difficult. But I felt that I was able to relax. Mr. Murphy said that he always does mindfulness in the morning. He doesn’t do it at night because he will be sleepy. I think I will try it sometimes. Doing mindfulness makes us refreshed and we can reconsider ourselves. It helps us to live a fulfilling life. I think doing the mindfulness is a good way to grow yourself.
Also we went to the art museum. I was excited to see the paintings and the statues. There are so many wonderful pieces of art but we had homework about the work so everyone chose their favorite one. The pieces of art selected by everyone was different, so I felt that each person’s favorite work was different, and the things that they feel from that work are also different. (August 4 K.Y)
